What Does a Comprehensive Eye Exam Entail

A comprehensive eye exam at Santa Ana Optometry is a detailed evaluation of your eyesight and the identification of any potential issues before they become severe. Every test includes:

  • Patient History: We begin by discussing your current health, medical history, vision issues, and habits that affect your eyes. This allows us to tailor your test and recommendations accordingly.
  • Initial Entrance Tests: Visual acuity testing (how you see), pupil response, and side (peripheral) vision tests.
  • Binocular Vision Testing: We evaluate how well your eyes are coordinated. Eye coordination or alignment problems can result in headaches, double vision, or trouble reading and focusing.
  • Refraction: This reading lets us get your eyeglass prescription for clear vision. We are taking a reading of whether you are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism.
  • Dilation and Eye Health Check: Dilating your eyes gives our optometrist a proper view of your retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels. This step is necessary to detect conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease—even if you don't yet have symptoms.

This comprehensive strategy in eye care will ensure that your eye exam not only corrects your vision needs but also supports the long-term health of your eyes.

Eye Exam Services We Offer

In addition to our routine eye exam, we offer various services for all aspects of your eye health and lifestyle needs:

Glasses: Frames and Lenses
Following your eye exam, we help you choose from many quality frames and prescription lenses. We offer custom lens technology for sharper vision and comfort. You can choose:

  • CR-39, Polycarbonate, Trivex, and Hi-Index materials
  • Single-vision, bifocal, trifocal, and progressive lenses
  • Transition lenses that darken in sunlight
  • Polarized lenses to eliminate glare
  • Anti-reflective and UV coatings
  • Blue light protection for digital screen wearers
  • Neurolens, which alleviates digital eye strain and headaches

Our eye care professionals can help you select a frame that fits your lifestyle and face and advise you on the lens material and coating best suited for your prescription and activities.

Contact Lenses and Fittings

We also provide professional fittings as a secondary service after the complete eye exam for those who wish to wear contact lenses. We ensure that your lenses provide clarity, comfort, and a proper fit for new wearers or those needing a new prescription.

We offer:

  • Soft Contact Lenses: Daily, bi-weekly, and monthly disposables
  • Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Lenses: Thick lenses providing clear vision
  • Scleral Lenses: Specialty lenses to fit patients who have irregular corneas or compromised tear production with dry eyes
  • Orthokeratology (Ortho-K): Specialty contact lenses are used to alter the shape of the cornea
  • MiSight Lenses: FDA-approved lenses for children to manage myopia

Each fitting is followed by tear film assessment, corneal health, and lens mobility to provide a comfortable and secure experience.

Sunglasses and Sport-Specific Lenses

Good vision outdoors is just as important as indoors. Santa Ana Optometry carries high-performance sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV radiation and improve visual performance.

We match lens type with your sport and lifestyle. From tennis and cycling to driving, skiing, and fishing, the right sunglass lens can reduce glare, eliminate eye fatigue, and accelerate your reaction time.

From casual fashion-forward attire to sports-specific color and polarized lenses, we help you discover the ideal shades to protect your eyes while promoting better performance and comfort.
